Chapel Hill Turkish Day by Turkish Student Association on March 23rd

Join Turkish Student Association for Chapel Hill Turkish Day, to celebrate Turkish culture and Nevruz (the coming of spring) this Saturday, March 23rd, from 4-7 p.m. at Turk Evi in Chapel Hill. There will be plenty of free food and drink, as well as dancing, performances, and live music. Some of the entertainment will include a performance by the Bosphorus Chorus and belly dancing! This event is sponsored by the Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation, the Bridge to Turkiye Fund, and the American Turkish Association of North Carolina.

We would love to see you, your friends, and your family there! Turk Evi is located at 743 East Franklin St. Chapel Hill, NC.

A surprising look at modern Turkey, the crossroads of East and West. For years, Turkey has been run by a stridently secular business and political elite, while its devout Muslim citizens have been pushed to the political and economic fringes. But now, even the most committed Muslims are embracing Western-style capitalism and commerce—and are ascending in Turkish society at the ballot box and in big business. This Wide Angle documentary captures a modern—and to many Westerners, surprising—face of Islam rarely seen in the American media. The program follows prominent members of Turkey’s up-and-coming business community—including two rival fashion entrepreneurs, one of whom has founded his company on Islamic principles—as they develop and carry out their manufacturing and marketing strategies. In addition, Turkish political cartoonist Salih Memecan discusses his work, Islam’s relationship with the West, and the benefits of Turkey’s association with Europe with anchor Daljit Dhaliwal. (57 minutes) Introduction and discussion led by UNC Prof. Banu Gökariksel.

Turkish Coffee Day

Final Turkish Coffee Day Flyer: “Turkish Coffee Day,” and will be held on October 10th, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in Hamilton 569. We envision this event as having a lecture component on the history and significance of Turkish coffee, followed by a short video demonstrating how to make Turkish coffee, a tasting of coffee, and perhaps even a raffle of Turkish coffee sets at the end! Turkish film screening: “Nar” on October 16, 2012

As part of Middle East Film Series, the Turkish film “Nar” (Pomegranate) by Ümit Ünal will be screened on October 16, 2012 at 7pm at the Varsity Theater in Chapel Hill. “Nar” won several awards at the 12th International Film Festival in 2011.
